So, what motivates a man to stray? Why do many husbands cheat on their wives?

Top Reasons Why Men Stray

It was popularly believed that men usually tend to give in to sexual temptation after a seven-year marriage period, popularly known as the seven-year itch. However, recent studies have proved that the seven-year itch has been replaced by a three-year itch. Therefore, men are increasingly cheating on their wives within the first three years of marriage. According to recent studies almost 75% of the married men tend to cheat on their wives. We will analyse why men tend to cheat on their wives in our following section.

Boys will be Boys

Many men just refuse to grow up. They consider themselves a child at heart and start feeling nervous or uncomfortable with the stability and maturity associated with a secure marriage. Such men tend to cheat not because they are unhappy with their marriage or because they are not satisfied with their marriage, but just for the fun of it.

It is not uncommon for such men to easily get swayed into a relationship with another woman who is attracted to them or appears interested in them. Psychologists often compare this behaviour to a man walking in his kitchen and finding a chocolate cake on the kitchen counter. The man might not be hungry but will end up eating the cake anyway because it may smell or look good. The situation is very similar when such married men see other women.

Men Want to Massage their Egos

Many men cheat on their wives because they want to be reassured that they are still attractive and capable of catching the attention of other women. Some men start feeling worthless and may face low self-esteem because of this feeling. Cheating on their wives helps them feel better about themselves. Such men want to cheat in order to be comforted about their manhood by the other woman.

Escape from Reality

It is not unusual for men to feel that they need an escape from their daily responsibilities and monotonous life. Having an extramarital affair helps men feel as if they are on a mental vacation. The extramarital affair provides an escape from daily responsibilities and cheating provides a thrill to an otherwise mundane life.
Such men fail to understand that marriage is not always romantic moments and happy vacations but a beautiful amalgamation of fun, romance, responsibilities, as well as the not-so-fun moments.

After a few years men start feeling that the romance and sex is not what it used to be and start seeking this type of fun elsewhere. They want to experience the feeling of falling in love again because they feel their married life is not able to provide that feeling anymore. It becomes difficult for some men to accept the gradual change in the portrayal of love when the marital life stabilises.

Men Tend to be Philanderers

Most researchers tend to believe that men tend to be philanderers. It becomes very tough for the philanderers to stay put in a marriage because they enjoy taking up infidelity as a hobby. Such men tend to have a very rigid concept of masculinity. Even though they take pride in their masculinity they constantly need different women to affirm their gender superiority.

Such men tend to have sex with multiple partners and they constantly try to impress women with their seductive skills, physical strength, and competitive victories. Such men tend to take their wives for granted and believe that because they are so superior to women, their wives will never leave them even if they cheat on them.

Unhappy Marriage

Some men tend to choose the easy way by starting a relationship with another woman rather than taking the time to sort things out in the marriage when the things get tough in their marriage. It is very easy to get swayed towards an office colleague or a close friend who can provide the mental and physical comfort.

There are times when some husbands are not able to resolve their differences with their wives. In one such instance, a man wanted to have a child whereas the wife kept delaying having a child because she was not ready for it. Constant frustration over this issue led the man to stray out of marriage because the atmosphere inside the marital home became very tensed and unhappy.
