Internet Marketing and List Building: Grab Their Eyeballs

Many Internet marketers look at list building with dollar signs in their eyes. "The Money Is in the List." How many times have you heard that one? "Get a dollar a month from every person on your list." Yep. Another one equating the people on your list with money.

But you're forgetting one important thing. You're not list building with walking cash machines, you're list building with people. I have no doubt that you're on several lists. So, how do you like to be treated? Which messages do you read, and why don't you read others?

If you're on one of my lists, you know that I mail out every single day, and if you're on more than one of my lists, you probably get more than that from me. I'm not saying that you shouldn't do that because you should! But there's one difference between how I do it and how most other Internet marketers do it, and you can, too. How?

I give people something interesting to read---a story.

Do you ever get a message from me that doesn't include some personal tidbit about what's going on in my life, or an anecdote about something else that interests you? No! Good copy is like storytelling. Even if I do give you links where you have the option of buying something, our messages aren't all hype and copy, they're human.

This is where your list building efforts will soar. If you tell a story, if you do something to enthrall people with your writing, first and foremost, you'll have the opportunity to sell things simply because people like to receive your emails. They actually read them! How many messages have you sent out to your list that never even got opened? You probably don't want to know. But give them a crazy headline, like "Don't Squat with Yer Spurs On!" or "in search of The Wolf," and you'll get people reading because they want to find out what the message is all about.

But once people are into the message, you have to keep them interested enough to finish. Tell a story:

in less than 2 hours
something is going to end
forever...

the problem is that I can't
tell you what it is...

but I can say that

1. People who are smart enough
to tap into this unstoppable
traffic stream before 12Noon
Eastern will get it...

2. The only people I will ever
tell about this secret time-limit
are the people who get in on
this profit-pulling system...

3. Hundreds of folks have already
taken the first step, and they
are going to find out later today
what happens at noon...

OK. What do you think? Will people click on the links in my email to find out what's going on? Trust me, a majority of them will. It's not the usual hype and crap that you see flooding your Inbox, day after day.

You probably need a little talent to do this, but writing is something that you can learn. The best thing for you to do is to take some kind of creative writing course. Or, just write something about your life that will interest people. Get them involved. If you don't you'll just end up in the recycle bin with the rest of the junk mail.

List building can be automatic, but maintenance of your list shouldn't be. You need to fertilize a garden to see it grow and you'll have to find ways to make your list building efforts to take root. Communicate with your list members on a human level and watch your profits grow, too.
